What is Mysore Yoga style?

Mysore practice is a unique approach to learning Yoga. It is aimed at helping you build a regular, individualized routine of yoga practice, using a sequence of poses that is learned step by step. 

Here’s how it works:

  1. Open time window: classes have a set time (6:30 AM to 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM) You can arrive at any point during this period.
  2. Practice Length: Your practice duration varies depending on how much of the sequence you know and your pace, usually lasting 40–90 minutes.

 

First day

On the first day of class, you’ll learn the Sun Salutations, to stretch and strengthen your whole body and invigorate your breath, a few standing postures to strengthen and stabilize your legs, back, and waist and meditative postures to focus your mind calm down, and steady your breath. You can expect your first class to last about 40 minutes.

REPETITION

In your second class, you’ll repeat what you learned on day one, and then, depending on your abilities you will learn the next few postures. If you have a yoga experience, you may learn several of the next postures. If you are new to yoga or have done some in the past but haven’t exercised in years, are recovering from an illness or injury, you will go more slowly and may learn some therapeutic poses to add into your routine.

INDIVUAL APPROACH

This methodology is based on indivual abilities.  You will not do everything in one go, but learn to be proficient, to a certain degree, in each posture before moving on to the next.  

Developing a personal and regular practice is the gateway to the transformation that Yoga brings.

Because this learning process allows for introspection, curiosity, and determination; it is a time when we can look within and observe what is happening in our body and its impact on our emotions. Our mat becomes the mirror of who we are, we can neither hide nor pretend.

Mysore Style is the traditional method of teaching Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, as developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. In a Mysore class, each individual practices at her/his own pace, following her/his breathing rhythm and personal abilities. This approach encourages gradual progress, promoting a sustainable practice over a lifetime.
