Yoga originated in India around 5,000 years ago, not as a physical exercise, but as a spiritual practice aimed at achieving enlightenment and mental discipline. It first appeared in religious texts recorded by priests. The word "yoga" is derived from the Sanskrit term “Yuj,” which means “to yoke” or “to unite.” This reflects the practice's goal of connecting the mind, body, and spirit through breathing, meditation and poses.

There are more than a dozen styles of yoga. Here are three of the most popular types in the U.S. :

Hatha: Hatha yoga encompasses a variety of styles that emphasize balance, strength, flexibility, breathing, and meditation. It tends to be less intense, making it an ideal starting point for beginners.

Vinyasa: Known as "flow yoga" or "vinyasa flow," this style is more vigorous and synchronizes breathing with continuous, flowing movements between poses. The seamless transitions elevate heart rate and body temperature, offering a dynamic workout.

Ashtanga: Ashtanga yoga is highly structured, featuring six series of progressively challenging poses. It is fast-paced and vigorous, with one pose flowing into the next, often incorporating a spiritual element. Classes typically last 90 minutes to two hours, and while students are encouraged to push their limits, they can progress at their own pace.

Absolutely! Yoga is one of the best activities to improve flexibility. Yoga is not just for the naturally flexible. Physically, yoga demands as much strength as it does flexibility. No matter your starting point, you will find certain postures easier due to your natural abilities, while others will require more practice. Each time you practice yoga, you will build both strength and flexibility.
