Ashtanga Yoga in Phoenix

What is Ashtanga Yoga?

Ashtanga Yoga is a structured and progressive practice often described as “meditation in movement.”
It connects breath and movement through a precise sequence of postures, helping you build mobility, stability, and focus over time.

Unlike many modern yoga styles, Ashtanga follows a clear structure, allowing you to develop consistency, understand your body, and experience real progress.

The origin

Ashtanga Yoga was developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, based on the teachings of Krishnamacharya in Mysore, India.
Today, it remains one of the most traditional and disciplined forms of yoga practice.

The series

Ashtanga Yoga follows a progressive system of sequences.
The Primary Series focuses on building a strong foundation through alignment, flexibility, and stability.

The method

The practice is based on the coordination of breath and movement (Vinyasa), creating a steady rhythm throughout the sequence.

A central concept of Ashtanga is Tristana, which includes:

  • Breath (Ujjayi)
  • Posture (Asana)
  • Gaze (Drishti)

Together, these elements support focus, awareness, and a deeper connection to the practice.

Frequently asked questions about Ashtanga

If you believe we have overlooked something and still have a question, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic style of yoga where students follow a set sequence of poses. They gradually progress through the series. This practice emphasizes the connection between movement and breath (vinyasa), Ujjayi breathing, and bandhas (energy locks).

Each style of yoga has a unique focus and purpose reflected in its teaching methods.

In Ashtanga Yoga, you execute the same poses in the same order along the same breath count, every time you practice.

Although Ashtanga can be challenging, it's important to understand that this practice is not exclusive to advanced yogis. In fact, its traditional teaching and practice methods can be an excellent fit for beginners just starting their yoga journey.
