Ashtanga Yoga course
What is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga Yoga is a traditional form of Yoga. Described as “meditation in mouvement”, its practice is based on sequences of poses that are linked by Vinyasa – the coordination of breath and mouvement.
The origin
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) founded Ashtanga Yoga. A student of Krishnamacharya for 25 years, he opened the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India, in 1948. Pattabhi Jois passed away in 2009, but Ashtanga Yoga continues through his grandson, Sharath Jois.
The method
In Ashtanga Yoga, a sequence of poses (asanas) flows through transition (Vinyasa) that coordinate mouvement and breathing.
Tristana
Vinyasa follows three fundamental principles called Tristana:
- Breath (Ujjayi Pranayama – the victorious breath), the basis of Vinyasa, key to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.
- Internal locks (bandhas) for correct posture alignment.
- Gaze direction (drishti) in all postures.
Tristana distinguishes Ashtanga Yoga from other forms of Yoga. By applying, these principles to each pose, the yogi find rhythm, physical and emotional awareness, as well as the mental control to focus on the present moment.
The series
In Ashtanga Yoga, there are six series of postures.
The primary series (Yoga Chikitsa) focuses on detoxification, alignment, flexibility, muscle strengthening, and mental observation.
The intermediate series (Nadi Shodhana) extends these goals and also works on the nervous system and deep emotions.
The advanced series (Sthira Bhaga), divided into four parts, further prepares the body and mind for Pranayama.
